This island was discovered in 1460, and at the time was called Llana. But then the salt deposits were found, and the name was changed to the now known Sal. Sal Cape Verde is thought to be the oldest island of all the other islands in the Cape Verde area. Sal was formed over 50 million years ago when a volcano erupted, that volcano is no longer active.
Most tourist stay in Sal Cape Verde when they arrive in Cape Verde, first because it is the most developed of all the islands, and secondly because one of the international airport is located on Sal. Today the population sits at almost 8000 people. Previously this population worked in the salt mines, later they became dedicated to the fishing industry and still later to the tourism industry. In fact over 50% of Cape Verde’s tourism arrives on the island of Sal.
